Weekly Learning Review 1st of March 2018

Weekly Learning Review
Class:      Year 3                      Week Ending: 29/2/2018
Literacy
This week, we have started a unit of work on non-fiction writing. The end result will be children writing their own formal letters. So far we have studied key vocabulary for formal writing. We have also completed our comprehension work, by comparing and answering questions from two different styles of letter writing. For our grammar this week, we have looked at suffixes and practised using them correctly in sentences. We have started to plan our own formal letter, using an example to help us. We are always trying to focus on presentation, cursive handwriting, and correct spelling during our literacy lessons. Spellings this week are ‘long o’ and ‘long u’ vowel sound. Please continue to help children with these at home. It is very important to know how to use the word correctly, not only the correct spelling.
Mathematics
We have had a fantastic week in maths. We started by looking at two digits by one digit multiplications and moved on to three digits by one digit calculations. We also looked at word problems using multiplication. During the last part of the week, we started to look at division. We started with basic division facts and then moved onto finding missing dividends, finally we tried some two digit and three digit dividends. Please keep practising times tables at home.
Science
In science, we looked at plant adaptations. We had good class discussions about how animals and plants have adapted to their environments. We looked at two sources of information. A poem and an article about Venus fly traps. We compared the styles of writing and information from both sources. Finally we watched a video explaining how important plants are for the planet and humans.
Humanities
We have started our history work and will be studying the ancient Greeks for a few weeks. Today, we looked at some aspects of daily life and watched a horrible histories film about some things the Ancient Greeks are famous for.  We also had interesting discussions about democracy and some of the more recent events in the history of Egypt.
Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship Education
This week we are continuing a unit of work called ‘Animals’. We shall be discussing the needs of animals and the work of charities.
