Weekly Learning Review

Class:      Year 3                      Week Ending: 8/2/2018
This week, we have started to look at instructional writing. We have investigated the language used when writing instructions and what makes instructions clear and easy to follow. Children answered comprehension questions based on instructions about making a mask and a grass potato head. At the end of the week, we creative writing that will be based on children writing their own instructions on how to make something; adding numbers and diagrams for clarity. Spelling words this week were short I and long I sounding words. Again, worksheets accompanied the spellings to help reinforce meaning. Please continue to help children at home with this. In grammar, we looked at the difference between sentences and phrases. Children then constructed their own sentences using phrases.
This week, we had a big focus on subtraction. Children now understand how to subtract, borrowing and carrying the number one. We did calculations from two digit numbers all the way up to five digit numbers. Some fun worksheets were used to solve mysteries based on the answers to the calculations.  This weeks homework will reinforce the learning of the week. Please ensure children can complete these calculations. Please could I also encourage you to practice the times tables at home on a regular basis; particularly 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x facts during this term.
We have been continuing our work on plants. I was pleased that the children could recall some of the difficult vocabulary from last week. This week we watched a scientific video about parts of a plant. Children completed diagrams and worksheets to clarify the learning from the video.
We completed work on parts of a volcano and children drew and labelled their own diagrams. We watched  the eruption of Mt St Helens and completed our story board.
Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship Education
This week, we are continuing our work on outcomes of making decisions. We are looking at scenarios and discussing possible outcomes based on personal decisions made.
